The calendar had now ticked round to the 1st of March, so MacGonigal's ankle had been misbehaving for about two weeks. In consultation with the pediatricians at Yorkhill, the local doctors were now pursuing a different diagnosis. They were considering whether or not MacGonigal had Osteomyelitis - an bacterial infection of the bone.
Apparently, it is difficult to confirm a diagnosis of osteomyelitis though it seems that MacGonigal was now showing all the symptoms of this infection. However, the local hospital did not have the facilities to perform the depth of examination necessary to confirm the diagnosis. So, it was now looking as if MacGonigal would have to travel to Yorkhill so that the necessary tests could take place.
MacGonigal's mother was a bit upset by this and was very worried about telling MacGonigal. She knew that MacGonigal would be upset too and that MacGonigal would most likely overreact to the news. Well, what little girl wouldn't be upset?
Anyway, Mum and Dad had a talk about it and agreed that going to Yorkhill would be in MacGonigal's best interests. Mum would be going to Yorkhill too, which should make things easier for MacGonigal. Also, MacGonigal's fairy god-auntie stayed close to Yorkhill which was an added bonus. And so the scene was set, all they had to do was tell MacGonigal!
