The Rollercoaster

Over the next few days, MacGonigal was given antibiotics and pain-killers but that nasty old ankle would not settle down. Her temperature kept spiking, which worried everyone - especially MacGonigal. Mum was spending most of her time at the hospital. Dad had to keep going to work but dropped in for a visit when he could. And MacGonigal's little sister visited too - but not too often because despite being cute as several buttons, she was a real handful being well into the terrible-two stage!

The weekend came and went. Throughout it MacGonigal was up and down like a rollercoaster. Sometime she'd be feeling really bright but for too much of the time she felt, well, bleuch!

The doctor's thought they'd pinned down her ailment as being caused by a Streptococcus A infection. They were consulting with the children's hospital at Yorkhill in Glasgow but still didn't seem to be able to explain MacGonigal's ongoing high temperature. The antibiotiacs were obviously working but there was something lurking around in there that just wouldn't give up.

By now, MacGonigal had been in hospital for a week. Mum and Dad were starting to wonder if there might be something else wrong. Something that might be worse...
